Last night I watched Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" and I'd like to start by stating that Snyder is an awesome action director as the various action scenes were hot. However the film was offset by the weak transitions or explanations of the narrative to the point that it seemed comical everytime the main character, Baby Doll was told to dance and the next shot is a close up as the story transitions into a kick ass action scenes and when it's over, everyone claps. I'd rather the story centered around the character's real world (in the mental ward,) as she tries to escape THEN have these imaginary action scenes which would coincide with how the girls are really trying to. I also thought that his cast is the glue that held it all together as the four women all seemed committed to there characters. Jena Malone is a favorite of mine whom might have made a good Padame for the "Star Wars" prequels. And Abby Cornish has a Nicole Kidman type presence always comes across as a strong character. But watching this film, I reminded myself at my disappointment in another film (that I had expectations for), "Bitch Slap" which confused me as well. On a flip side maybe both films were over my head and only Artie film geeks understand them both. At the end of the day, Snyder took a risk with an original concept and it did not go as well as planned. And yet his past films have been cutting edge as I still think that "Watchmen" is the new "Blade Runner" as people will come up to speed with the film within the next few years as "Runner" did. But "Sucker Punch" seemed like he was trying to make an expensive director's reel for a studio job and we know that he is much better than this one film and hopefully the new,new "Superman" will once again prove that. |
