With a number of celebrity deaths the past Summer, outside of Michael Jackson's passing the other personality that through me for a loop was John Hughes. I am a HUGE fan of his legacy to the point that I had his dialogue down from many of his films.. As I rode the train today I remembered that back in high school myself and another classmate (Chris Morales) would exchange banter from John Hughes' films and often we'd write the lines down on pieces of paper and pass them back and forth. One time we were caught by our science teacher who grabbed the various lines of dialogue and he thought he'd embarrass us by reading the it in front of the class. BUT he had no friggin' idea what the hell we were talking about. I think his reply was something like "What the hell is this"? We had to explain it was lines of movie dialogue and the rest of the class thought it was rather funny. And through that humor, we never got into any trouble. In this day and age if two guys are caught doing various such things, two words... "Brokeback Mountain"...
Anyway, It was through John's films that I became a fan of Anthony Michael Hall as well as many of the other cast members. But it was Hall whom often played the "Geek" in Hughes' films that I often connected with because of his humorous antics no matter what other characters thought about him. And I remember after watching "The Breakfast Club" wanting more after "John Bender" froze on the football field and the credits rolled and then wondering if those kids remain friends after the day's hijinks in detention. And how long would "Gary" and "Wyatt" keep their new girlfriends as they too were on a quest toward young adulthood after . As I'm writing this, I now recall every summer I'd dedicate one weekend to watching the all of his films that I liked (including Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Some Kind of Wonderful and Ferris Bueller's Day Off). It was going to be a long and fun Saturday. As a matter of fact I need to celebrate another weekend revisiting those characters in my tribute to a great writer/ director whom had his finger on the voice of a generation at one point in time.
P.S.: "Pretty in Pink" could not hold 16 candles to "Some Kind of Wonderful" ...
Also here is a link from another blogger whom had Hughes as a pen pal, I thought it was heartwarming that he took time out to communicate and somewhat mentor her...
